New York - 2023

Chinatown

The magic of Chinatown really starts to show as daylight fades, and vibrant neon lights illuminate the streets in a kaleidoscope of colors. It transforms the disctrict into a captivating paradise for photography, capturing the lively energy of street vendors and the alluring scents of exotic spices. Chinatown is a microcosm of Chinese culture, transporting visitors to a different world. Among all the places I've explored in New York, Chinatown stands out as the ultimate street photography haven. The fear of missing a great capture around the next corner makes it hard to set the camera aside, revealing endless opportunities for striking subjects.

Oculus

Nestled in the heart of New York, adjacent to the iconic 9/11 memorial, stands the impressive Oculus Center—a $4 billion train station resembling a rising white pigeon amidst the gray urban landscape. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, this architectural marvel provides photographers a unique canvas. With an all-white palette, including Italian marble floors, the structure creates a wonderful play of hard shadows and light. This monochromatic backdrop enhances the contrast, making people and shadows stand out and offers photographers an exceptional opportunity for captivating snapshots.

MoMa

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York stands as a world-renowned institution devoted to contemporary and modern art. Situated in Midtown Manhattan, MoMA boasts an exceptional collection including paintings, sculptures, photographs, films, and design objects. Beside the famous works of Monet or Van Gogh, it is also the architecture, exhibition rooms and visitors providing great scenes and motives for photography.

Metro

The New York City subway, launched on October 27, 1904, is one of the world's oldest transit systems. Starting from City Hall to 145th Street and Broadway, its history runs deep. I often felt similarities to Berlin's subway with the wealth of diversity and interesting characters, urban noises, and a well-worn charm, turning platforms into storytelling stages. Despite the shady atmosphere, it is the interplay of constant movement and people frozen in anticipation for their subways which creates compelling snapshots.
